Why Starting Musical Theatre Again Was The Best Decision I've Made

Depending on how closely you follow along with my life on social media, you may or may not know that last month I was lucky enough to be in a production of Legally Blonde the Musical at the Theatre Royal in Margate. Now, if you've been following me for a really long time, you may even remember the time I was in Sweeney Todd in Brighton, in which case, thank you so much for sticking around me for so long!

Sweeney Todd was the last show I performed in before Legally Blonde, all the way back in 2015. When I left university, I moved away from Brighton back home to Kent, and to be honest I was pretty sure that I wouldn't be doing musical theatre ever again, especially being so busy with my job and blogging. However, an audition popped up online for Legally Blonde, which just so happens to be one of my favourite musicals ever, and I just couldn't pass up the chance to audition (with the encouragement of various friends).

And I got in! Not only did I get in, but I got one of the parts I wanted - Margot, who was such a fun role to play.

I cannot tell you how nervous I was about starting musical theatre again. Not only had I not performed for anyone except my shower for around 2 years, but I was about to enter a group of people who I didn't know at all, and most of them knew each other already. The fear was definitely there that they wouldn't like me and I'd be left out.

But it was hands down one of the best decisions I've ever made. Starting musical theatre again just reminded me how passionate I am about it. I can't even describe how performing makes me feel, but when I'm on stage it's like everything in my life that feels like a mess doesn't matter anymore. It makes me unbelievably happy, which, for someone who suffers from depression, is a pretty big deal!

All of my fears about the other people in the show quickly showed themselves to be fictional, and I feel so lucky to have met a group of such talented and kind people. Everyone was so welcoming, especially seeing as I was a complete outsider who nobody knew.

As much as I love blogging and Instagram, I've been wanting a hobby outside of it for quite some time now. I wanted something that could allow me to switch off from my online life and allow me to let go and this was just the perfect antidote to that.

Starting musical theatre again was hands down the best decision I made this year. It was hard work but 100% worth it, and I know that if I get the chance I'll definitely be doing it again next year. If there's something you're thinking about doing that you love, but you're not sure if you should take the leap, then I hands down suggest you do it. I was so scared about starting again but I'm so pleased I did. It's also showed me that I really want to start talking about theatre more on my blog and social media, so you may see more theatre related content coming your way!

Do you have a hobby that you're super passionate about? I'd love to hear about it in the comments x
