13 Life Lessons from my Mother

On my 21st birthday my mother gave me a letter. To this day it is one of my most treasured possessions, one of those objects that somebody wouldn't give a second glance to, but I know that it's priceless. Because, this letter contains the best advice anybody has ever given me; 13 life lessons that have changed the way I think about everything. So, when I discovered it again in my memory box the other day I felt that it would be selfish to keep this incredible advice to myself. Everyone should be able to treasure it like I have. I hope they help you as much as they have helped me.

Darling Jordan,

Growing up is a complicated thing. I said I have never understood why God gave us wisdom when we get older, but not to the young. Perhaps that's just the way life want to teach you lessons. I want you to know that we all make mistakes along the way and I wish I could wrap you up and stop you from ever getting hurt but unfortunately I can't. Everything I tell you, darling, is not always going to be the correct advice but I am going to put some things down that I have learnt along the way. I hope these will help.

1. Trust your instincts. Nine times out of ten your original instinct will be right; you just have to pay attention to it.

2. Be kind to yourself. Love yourself. Nobody else will be able to if you don't first. It's a hard lesson, that one, but important. If you love yourself you won't let anyone else hurt you.

3. We all have something that gives us great mental anguish (my legs should be longer, I wish I was taller). It will give you anxiety, but one day you will look back at an old photo of yourself and wonder why you worried about it. So look in the mirror now and see how beautiful you are. Cherish it.

4. Only one person can change your life and that's you. Don't wait for anyone else to do it, Prince Charming or otherwise. Be your own Prince Charming.

5. Fight for who you are. It takes a long time to find this one, but when you do take care of it; it's a precious gift.

6. When you are annoyed don't speak from that place inside you where you are hurting, speak out of love and desire to make things better.

7. Learn how to say 'no' (this one I know you will find tough). Practise it everyday and you will get better at it.

8. Say thank you everyday for something, even if sometimes you don't feel it. You will begin to see all the good things in your life.

9. It's never too late to stop and change the way you are going, but if you find something, like once-in-a-lifetime love, hold onto it.

10. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I hope you don't have to go through this but it's true. Trust me.

11. Life seems so long when we are in the middle of it, but when we get nearer to the end you realise how little time we have on this earth. Live for now, not tomorrow or yesterday. You don't know what will happen tomorrow and yesterday is gone so all you have is this moment. Enjoy it!

12. Sometimes you can't fix it. You just have to decide whether it's worth hanging around until it fixes itself. Sometimes you just have to let go.

13. True love, even I haven't got the answer for that one, but I think that it's about being with someone through the ups and downs of life and even when it gets bad and you could walk out the door you wouldn't actually be able to. Well, that's how I feel about your dad. Speaking of him, I got lucky there, Jordan, but don't ever tell him.

Well, I can't think of much more, if I do I will be sure to pass these on, but, Jordan, it's your life. There's no secret to it, just live it and make every moment count; not in the big ways just the small ways. It's a fantastic journey.

Love Mama xxx
