10 Ways to be an Everyday Princess

Photography by Lauren Shipley

If you've followed me long enough, you'll know I have a teensy obsession with being a princess. Now, as lovely as being a real Disney Princess would be (I'm still waiting for my animated feature film, Disney!), I've realised that I may just have to settle for being an everyday princess.

And before you run away because you hate Disney, hear me out! Being a princess isn't all about tiaras and tulle, you know! I'm often inspired by the quote from A Little Princess (aka, the most heartbreaking movie of all time), where Sara confronts that witch of a teacher and says;

"I am a princess...all girls are! Even if they live in tiny old attics, even if they dress in rags, even if they aren't pretty, or smart, or young, they're still princesses."

No matter who you are, you can always be an everyday princess, even if you loathe dresses and the colour pink. So, here are my top 10 ways to channel the spirit of the everyday princess.

1. Always see the best in others - even when they can't see it themselves. Although not everyone is as pleasant as we would like them to be, often there is a spark of good in everyone, even if they refuse to let it show.

2. Have a sense of humour - One of my favourites! There's nothing worse than somebody who takes everything extremely seriously. Obviously there is a line where something is no longer funny, but just plain rude, but being able to laugh with people is a fabulous quality.

3. Be kind - Pretty self-explanatory! Don't be mean, bitchy, rude or obnoxious. Always make the effort to be kind to someone, even if they're not making the effort with you. Kill them with kindness! If they don't appreciate your shining personality, that's their problem.

4. Treat animals and nature with respect - There is nothing worse, in my opinion, than somebody who doesn't treat living creates and the environment with respect, whether that be intentionally squashing a snail or throwing their rubbish out of a car window. I often take it a bit too far and move worms out of the pavement so people can't step on them (yes, I'm crazy), but simply remembering this planet is our home that we must look after is enough.

5. Never judge somebody before you truly know them - Heard something about that girl/guy from somebody? Think they have a bit of a funny haircut? Before judging somebody based solely on their appearance or rumours, take a moment to talk to them and make a judgement for yourself.

6. Appearances; you do you! - As I said before, it's not all tiaras and tulle! To me, being an everyday princess is about rocking what you love, whatever your style. If you are comfortable and happy in what you look like, then you are a princess through and through!

7. Always thank others - Bit of a silly one, but I always make the effort to thank somebody if they do me a big favour and I always buy them a card or a present. Generosity is a quality that people admire.

8. Never stop following your dreams - In the words of Shia LaBoeuf: "JUST. DO IT." And he's right! Don't let your dreams be dreams. It takes ten years to be an overnight success and if you want something so much that you're willing to work through the nose to get it, go. Live your dream.

9. Cherish true love - If there's anything I've learnt, it's that true love doesn't have to be from a boyfriend/girlfriend (and it wasn't Frozen that taught me that either!). Remember those around you who love you, the family and the friends who would be there no matter what. That's what true love really is.

10. Believe in the everyday adventure of life - I originally created  this blog with the intention of it being my adventure book where I could record everyday life and the things that were important to me. You don't have to travel the world to go on adventures. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones taking place right on your doorstep.

So there you have my 10 ways to be an everyday princess. I've been using the #everydayprincess hashtag for a while now, but I'd love to share it with you! Whenever you feel like the princess that you are, you can hashtag it, because what else is social media for?

I hope you're all having a wonderful week! <3
